Course Details
Bookkeepers are a necessity for every business so it’s no surprise that the bookkeeping profession is continually growing. Whilst bookkeeping is demanding and challenging, it is also exciting and rewarding too. Practical bookkeeping is about assessing and knowing how a business works and then providing the relevant advice and figures to assess the financial position of the business.

The ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) is the largest bookkeeping organisation in the world. ICB are focused on promoting and maintaining the principles of bookkeeping. They achieve this through a series of appropriate qualifications and awards that recognise academic attainment.
The ICB’s objectives are:
- To promote bookkeeping as a profession.
- To enable bookkeeping to gain recognition as an integral part of the financial profession.
- To promote training in the principles of bookkeeping.
- To develop personal study skills and improve confidence of those persons who undertake a course in bookkeeping.
- To enable the achievement of a qualification, which may be used to enhance prospects for progression into higher levels of study.
- To improve the career prospects of its members.
Qualifications
Completion of the course allows you to obtain the industry recognized qualifications through the ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers). Students who have previously taken the ICB Level 2 Bookkeeping course have achieved an 82.6% pass rate, which is above the national average.
Once you have been awarded the ICB Certificate you are able to put the letters AICB after your name to show you are an associate member if the ICB. However, students need to register with ICB independently and also submit their own applications for exams. The exams are held at local centres across the country three times a year (March, June and October).
The ICB is the world’s largest bookkeeping association with over 150,000 members.
Along with an extra qualification you will be demonstrating your commitment to your own development and ambitions. The course doesn’t just cater for those looking for a career in bookkeeping, it will also provide you with the knowledge to keep your own accounts if you run your own business.

Study Details
The course has been designed in a logical order so not only can you learn at a pace comfortable to you, you can also build on the knowledge you have already gained when you move onto the next topic. There are a total of 7 study books that have been written by industry experts to ensure you get the key information and up-to-date standards.
During your studies there will be 17 assignments to complete. You will send your completed assignments to your personal tutor who will assess your progress and provide you with important feedback and advice.
In order to complete the Practical Bookkeeping course you will be required to sit the following exams:
- Level 1 - taken at home
- Sage Competency - taken at home
- Level 2 Manual Bookkeeping – taken at external assessment centre
- Level 2 Computerised Bookkeeping – taken at home
The duration of the Practical Book-keeping Intermediate course should amount to approximately 220 hours of study time.
Note: The minimum computer hardware requirements for this course are:
- Your operating system must be at least Windows 2000(SP4), WindowsXP(SP3), Windows 2003 or Windows Vista.
- 1GHz or faster processor
- 512MB RAM or higher
- 400MB of available hard disk space for installation
- DVD-ROM drive
