Recognised Home Study UK Qualifications

OCN

'Open College Network' is an accredited and nationally recognised awarding body since 1987. It specialises in awarding a 'NQF' or 'QCF' qualification, equivalent to an NVQ up to level 3, an A level, or an Advanced Diploma. OCN specialises in particular in integrating 'Skills for Life' into their qualifications, and so with them it is possible to improve and illustrate competency in numeracy, literacy and ICT skills.

EDI

The 'EDI' awarding body accredit in the business sector, including NVQs and SVQs (National or Scottish Vocational Qualifications). They are a recognised awarder of qualifications which signify practical skills and quality of skills training at work. They can also award technical certificates and apprenticeships. EDI qualifications are also sometimes applicable for government funding.

Microsoft

Microsoft are the award winning computer software and engineering giant who can give accredited qualifications in the area of their globally used computing and programming software.

COMPTIA

CompTia, the computing technology and industry association, offers courses and qualifications in the area of computing, and information technology, in particular for entry level computer technicians or programmers. Unlike a Microsoft qualification, for example, their qualifications are 'vendor neutral,' in that they facilitate and demonstrate competency in all types of computing and technology work.

SUN

SUN are the awarding body who are specifically capable of awarding qualifications relating to their technology, Java. Only trained Java and Sun accredited programmers can illustrate the qualification which marks them out as certified to work with Java, a technology that's in high demand.

AAT

The AAT, or the association of Accounting Technicians, awards accounting and finance qualifications. Diplomas, education and training is available which is AAT certified. Many accounting jobs look for a recognised AAT qualification to assess levels of knowledge. In some cases possession of the AAT qualification or diploma enables entry into Chartered Accountancy.

ICB

The Institute of Certified Bookkeepers is a globally recognised and the largest of the bookkeeping awarding bodies. It has many established recognised bookkeeping qualifications - for example the ICB level 1. ICB aims to standardise quality in many financial technologies, including SAGE.

CIW

As one of the more recent awarding bodies, CIW was set up to recognise the skills and to provide learning opportunities in internet knowledge. It is a 'web technology standard', vital in a digital age. The CIW qualifications allow a demonstration of skills in web design, databases, security, networking, and other internet skills.

BTEC

BTEC qualifications are actually administered by the EDEXCEL awarding body. EDEXCEL was formed from a merge with the pre-existing 'Business and Technology Education Council,' provider of vocational qualifications, and the University of London Examinations and Assessment Council. A BTEC is a training and skills based qualification that allows for assimilation into the workplace through tailored and practical technical skills.

CIM

The recognised awarding body for qualifications relating to marketing, from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. They are internationally recognised and include diplomas and certificates in marketing, aspects of marketing and marketing development or management.

ITT

Initial Teacher Training qualifications allow for entry into teaching jobs or even progression onto a PGCE, or certificate in education, and is recognised by all educational institutions in the UK.
